ABC OF APPROPRIATION - RESEARCH THROUGH DESIGN
ABC of Appropriation — Research through Design is an image based publication exploring the topic of appropriation in the visual culture. Throughout history the creatives face the need for inspiration from the past and the reuse of existing materials. However, the symbols carry their meanings which work in their new surroundings and the way it communicates could have the consequences the designer has not thought of. The key as a graphic designer is to know the history, know the material you are working with, and know the culture and context in which is set. Sensitivity to the past and the ability to reflect it enables not to fetishise the historical artefacts but to search for the similarities and emphasise the parallels between the past and nowadays. The content of this small publications show some examples of how the recognisable visual codes are adapted to the new circumstances arranged in an alphabetical order.
